After Tricking Kind Couple Into Thinking She Was A Kid, 38YO Woman Learns Her Fate In Court

A Brazilian woman has finally learned her fate after reportedly spending 14 months convincing a kind couple that she was a vulnerable 12-year-old girl.

Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, now 37, admitted that she lied about her identity but insisted she never intended to scam anyone.

The bizarre case began when Oliveira approached a church in Joinville, Brazil, and told a pastor that she had escaped mistreatment in the northern state of Pará.

Authorities identified the woman as Amanda, who introduced herself as a 12-year-old named “Gabriele” after being connected to a couple through a local church pastor.

She claimed she had escaped a horrific past involving parental a**se, s*x trafficking, and forced medical experiments.

When the couple questioned her mature appearance, she allegedly explained that she had been forced to undergo hormone treatments as a child.

For the next 14 months, she maintained the identity.

She reportedly spoke in a high-pitched voice, used pacifiers and baby bottles, played with dolls, and even staged fake night terrors to convince the couple she was a traumatized child.

The couple reportedly became so devoted to her that they treated her as their daughter, celebrated her 12th birthday, and planned to formally adopt her.

The elaborate story began to fall apart when a visiting relative became suspicious of her appearance.

After searching online, the relative reportedly found a news report about Oliveira allegedly pulling a similar scheme under another name in Rio de Janeiro and contacted police.

Investigators found that she had allegedly used variations of the same scheme across Brazil for more than 15 years.

Court records reportedly linked her to cases involving Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Ceará, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Norte, and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Her elaborate child persona was reportedly part of a much larger deception spanning more than a decade

In another alleged scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic, Amanda reportedly pretended to be a 13-year-old girl with terminal leukemia.

In yet another case, she allegedly claimed to be autistic and suffering from serious health problems.

According to WION, she reportedly went to extraordinary lengths to make her stories believable, allegedly embedding needles, nails, and wires under her own skin to create the appearance of injuries from the a**se she claimed to have suffered.

According to Fox News, Amanda did not deny the allegations but argued that her actions were driven by a deep emotional need rather than an intention to commit fraud.

She said, “Of course, I deceived people, I lied. But I didn’t intend to scam anyone.”

She also explained why she repeatedly sought out the care of people who believed she was a vulnerable child.

“There was a certain void in me, a need to have that kind of care, so I always sought it out,” Oliveira said.

Her lawyer, Lúcio Sousa, similarly described the deception as a survival strategy rather than a conventional scam.

“She admits that she invented an identity,” Sousa said. “It was the way she found to survive. But she has been a vulnerable person for more than 20 years.”

He added that the 37-year-old had lived on the streets and argued that no allegation existed that she obtained a financial advantage through robbery or theft.

The court ultimately rejected the defense’s argument and concluded that Oliveira had acted deliberately and consciously.

On August 20, 2026, the court sentenced her to 18 months and 10 days in prison, along with four months and 18 days of detention.

She was ordered to begin her sentence under a semi-open regime and was denied the right to appeal while free.

Her lawyers have said they will appeal the decision.

Meanwhile, the case has prompted disbelief online, with many commenters questioning how the couple could have believed Amanda was actually 12.

One person wrote, “People should start out as suspicious, and become trusting with corroborating evidence, rather than the reverse.”

Another added, “The way inflation is going I don’t blame her and lock the people up who thought she was 12.”

As Amanda recently learned her fate, social media users have largely compared the bizarre case to the horror film Orphan

Another user commented, “How tf did they actually believe this was a 12-year-old there is something just as wrong with them like there is with her.”

“Not gonna lie, that’s impressive. But who did she fool into thinking she was underage?”

The bizarre similarities have also led many people to compare the case to Orphan, the 2009 horror movie centered on an adult woman who pretends to be a child and becomes part of a family.

Oliveira reportedly used a similarly childlike persona, complete with dolls, baby bottles, pacifiers, and a high-pitched voice.

Unlike the fictional movie, however, the real-life case centered on alleged fraud and Amanda’s claimed desire for care and affection.

For now, she remains in custody following her conviction, while her lawyers prepare to challenge the sentence.

“Remember that film The Orphan… sends shivers down my spine. Life truly is stranger than fiction,” one netizen wrote
