The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced plans last month to initiate a status review for the Southern population of the rare bog turtle — last seen two decades ago in South Carolina — after receiving petitions to list the animals for protections under the Endangered Species Act.
Populations in South Carolina, mostly connected to the Upstate, have received state protections for years, which makes it illegal for people to collect the animals or have them in their possession without a permit.
